Guest contribution: Vulture-cult in Germany

By Caroline Stollmeier

The museum of Attendorn in the German region of Sauerland pays great homage to precious vultures. The current special exhibition deals with the history of Native Americans in Sauerland. Of course, the famous novel “Unter Geiern” (“among vultures”) by Karl May is mentioned. Visitors of the museum get an extraordinary salutation by two suspicious but friendly looking vultures right in the entrance hall.
An important part of the permanent exhibition is a collection of small figures made of tin. One of the most outstanding exhibits is the tree full of vultures right from the African steppe.
Carrion go, woll?!
(“woll” is an impression nearly without meaning like “yeah”)
